# MCP quickstart

Source: https://www.sheepit.ai/docs/mcp

Let your AI assistant drive Sheepit. Create and change flags, query events, build dashboards and check release health, in plain language.

- Package: [@sheepit-ai/mcp](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@sheepit-ai/mcp)
- Runs on: Node 18+ (the login step needs Node 20+)

## 1. Create an account

Don't have an account yet? [Create one, free](https://www.sheepit.ai/signup). There is no key to copy: the next step signs you in through your browser.

## 2. Install

```bash
# 1. Sign in (opens your browser)
npx @sheepit-ai/cli login
# 2. Register the server with every AI client it finds
#    (dry run without --yes)
npx @sheepit-ai/mcp install --yes
```

## 3. Or add it to your client by hand

`mcp config (manual)`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sheepit": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@sheepit-ai/mcp", "serve"]
    }
  }
}
```

## 4. Check that it worked

Restart your AI client, then ask it: "What Sheepit tools do you have?"

## Worth knowing

- install looks for Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Cursor, and adds the server to each one it finds. Without --yes it only shows what it would change.
- Restart your AI client after installing so it loads the new server.
- The server uses the login from step 1. On CI or headless machines, set SHEEPIT_API_KEY (a secret or dev key) and SHEEPIT_API_URL instead.
